Ban Plastic Grocery Bags in San Diego, California!

Plastic bags are everywhere: landfills, oceans, lakes, neighborhoods parks, and they are suffocating our wildlife. Their material comes from crude oil and natural gas. "Every time we use a plastic bag they go and get more petroleum from the Middle East and bring it over in tankers," said the executive director of Earth Resource Foundation. "We are extracting and destroying the Earth to use a plastic bag for 10 minutes."

Moreover, they harm wildlife and marine life. Animals both on land and in water are being strangled, choked and killed by them. They are now the fifth most common debris item found on beaches.
It is estimated that over 100,000 whales, seals, turtles and other marine animals are killed by them annually. Over 20 countries around the world have banned them already. With most estimates dictating that Americans use close to 100 billion bags a year, what’s stopping us?

Dear San Diego City Council,

We are calling for a city-wide ban on the use of plastic bags in grocery stores. The production of these plastic bags are contributing to global warming, and harming wildlife, along with increasing pollution, and using up precious natural recourses. Already over 20 countries around the world have done so, along some cities in our state. Why is San Diego lagging behind, when we should be the leader of this movement. We need to step up, and fight for the future of our incredible planet. Not only for ourselves, but for the animals we share it with and the future of our children.
