Geese raised for down do not have a painless life. They are raised for down are live-plucked numerous times in their life. This procedure is extremely painful for the animal. Birds, including ducks and geese, do have pain receptors in their skin from which the feathers are plucked. Studies indicate that the heart rate and behaviors of the animals clearly indicate that having their feathers plucked most likely causes both pain and distress.
And the cruelty doesnt end there. Producers of foie gras often boost their profits by selling the feathers of force-fed ducks and geese. These birds already have to endure having tubes rammed down their throats and their stomachs pumped full of so much corn mush that their livers swell to about 10 times their normal size, which is how foie gras is made.
Both live bird plucking and foie gras are well know to be barbaric forms of animal cruelty. As the USDA to protect geese with the Animal Welfare Act.
