Out of the Pound and into a healthy shelter!!

This petition is being signed by residents and taxpayers in the Davis Ca and Yolo co to request that the city move forward in providing progressive humane animal sheltering. This petition was brought about by the significant deterioration of the current facility, the lack of oversight, high kill rate and unhealthy conditions of Yolo county animal control.
We the undersigned support bringing progressive and humane animal sheltering to Davis California. We request the city council to stop supporting Yolo Countys high kill animal facility by NOT signing new contracts with Yolo County Animal Control and investing in a LEED certified, sustainable humane animal sheltering facility in the city of Davis.
1. We request an immediate evaluation of the facility, services and statistics as it relates to the current contract with Yolo county Animal Control Services and exercise oversight until other sheltering options are in place. After fact-finding trip to Yolo Co. Animal Control we request a comparison visit the Sacramento County Animal Care facility located on Bradshaw.
2. We want to explore the possibilities for a new LEED certified sustainable facility in Davis. A sheltering environment that offers community involvement, partnership with UCD, green design, improved animal welfare, spay and neuter program, low cost/no cost clinic and pet ownership education. Animal sheltering that truly reflects Davis.
Davis prides itself as an educated, progressive, green and forward thinking town, yet we have been neglectful in meeting the needs of displaced animals by contracting with a high kill, outdated pound model that we can no longer support. Davis should have been on the forefront of change as we declare that protecting animals is a legitimate and compelling public interest and petition the Davis City Commissioners give adequate sheltering to prevent the unnecessary deaths of roughly 80% of animals from Davis that enter animal control.
The world is watching. Let Davis be an example of positive change.
