These Videos Feed Viewers Lies, and YouTube is Helping Them

YouTube is the latest corporate giant to play fast and loose with the public's understanding of climate change. A recent report from the activist group Avaaz revealed that YouTube's algorithm is recommending climate change denial and conspiracy videos. On top of that, the video-sharing platform is monetizing these videos.

Please sign the petition to demand that YouTube demonetize these videos and remove them from the site's recommendation algorithm!

Human-induced climate change is not up for debate - the evidence is undeniable. UN scientists have made it clear that the time for action is now, purporting that we have only ten years to curb the world's emissions drastically, or we will reach the point of no return.

And yet YouTube is giving a platform and free advertising to these outrageous videos that spew misinformation. The site is directly contributing to public confusion and fear. According to a study by Hootsuite, YouTube has 2 billion logged-in users each month. That's over 25% of the world population. 70% of what YouTube users watch is based on the site's recommendation algorithm.

Hootsuite also reported that YouTube's projected advertising revenue for 2020 is $5.5 billion - and that's only in the U.S. This is even more shameful when you factor in the money that the video owners make when advertisements are played before their videos. They spread misinformation and make a pretty penny doing it.

YouTube has historically acted to protect its users from other conspiracy theories such as those coming from the anti-vaccine movement. This means YouTube knows what steps to take. Urge them to demonetize climate change denial content, and stop recommending it to users. Sign the petition today.
