Ban the sale of shark fins in the US

Shark finning is the process of a shark having it’s fins cut off once they’re pulled to shore. Once a shark is finned, it’s usually thrown back into the ocean, where it can no longer swim correctly. After sharks have their fins cut off, they typically die of blood loss.

Around 100 million sharks die each year due to shark finning. Shark finning is a big reason that several shark species are endangered. Whale sharks, for example, are a species whose population has taken a major hit due to finning.

Why is shark finning so popular? Shark finning is popular for several reasons. The main one being that the shark fin is the most expensive part of the shark, it can be sold for thousands of dollars. Shark fins are also popular for its use in the traditional Asian dish, shark fin soup. The fins are in high demand due to the dishes popularity.

On January 4th, 2011, the Shark Conservation Act of 2010 was signed into office. The Shark Conservation Act of 2010 made shark finning illegal in the United States. Despite the fact that finning is illegal, the sale of shark fins is still legal in several US states. For example, In South Carolina the sale of shark fins is still legal.

The sale of shark fins should be banned. It encourages the sale of a product that could lead to the extinction of many shark species. As long as the fins continue to be sold, then the industry will continue. If the industry continues then that means more and more lives of sharks lost and possible extinction.
