In the remote forests of northern Myanmar (Burma) lives the
Rhinopithecus strykeri, a
newly found species of monkey. Also known by local peoples as the mey nwoah (or %u2018monkey with an upturned face%u2019), it has peacefully co-existed in these forests for an indeterminate amount of time.
Unfortunately, its habitat is in the path of the
Belo Monte Monster Dam, a development planned by the China Power Investment Corp. and the Brazilian government.
It's reported that, should this project continue, some 25,000 Amazon peoples will be displaced; and threaten the very life of the 'monkey with the upturned face.'"Dear Mey Nwoah: We hardly knew you."
All together, this would be yet another richly diverse habitat lost forever in the name of progress and money. And, considering the discovery of this unique species, a preserve seems more in order: the exact opposite action.
If you value the livelihoods of these Amazonian peoples and all life thriving in this remote habitat, please put your name and info to this petition. And thank you! We the undersigned do hereby express our opposition to the continuance of the Belo Monte Monster Dam project.
We are sending this petition out of the following considerations and concerns:
1) Respect and concern for the peoples living in the area of Belo Monte (and their culture);
2) Concern for the balance and preservation of ecosystems in the area of Belo Monte, as the habitat forest in northern Myanmar of the newly-discovered monkey species: Rhinopithecus strykeri.
We respectfully ask that this project be stopped.
