This Restaurant Serves Their Food With a Side of Cruelty

"It smells! Food is average & overpriced! Staff are rude! Entertainment is cruel!!!"

That's how one reviewer on TripAdvisor describes their visit to the Iron Bar of Port Douglas, Australia. The backpacker hotspot is known around the area for its mediocre steak, their live bands, and animal cruelty. This is the home of the famous cane toad race, in which customers pay five Australian dollars for the chance to pick a cane toad and race it against those of other customers.

Seven nights a week, the cane toads are plopped out of a bucket onto a table and then contestants use party blowers to scare their selected animal so it will jump back in the bucket. The contestant whose toad makes it to the bucket first wins!

The toads hop and jump for their lives. They plop off the table and hit the ground with a thud, they may get injured when they hop into the bucket. It's all very cruel. The shocking thing is the Iron Bar knows this but they do it anyway. In fact, its part of their disgusting marketing campaign on their website. If you click the option for "Cane Toad Racing" they brag about just how cruel the game is: "Dubiously ethical," " Amphibian debauchery at its finest" and "Unashamedly politically incorrect" are just a few of the quotes brandished in the giant font on their site.

While cane toads are considered a pest in Australia, they are still living things and should be treated with respect. Using them as props and game pieces is despicable and inhumane. Not all animals are cute and cuddly but that doesn't make them any less deserving of being treated with kindness.

Tell the Iron Bar that this game isn't fun. Sign the petition and ask them to stop racing cane toads.
