Australia just dedicated $500 million AUD to reef restoration to address its imperiled Great Barrier Reef, but researchers say it's not enough. Climate change is a huge factor in the embattled reef's future, and it's not the only threat.
Recent research shows two chemicals found in sunscreen, oxybenzone and octinoxate, are harmful for reefs and may be contributing to die-offs in tropical regions around the world. They can cause coral bleaching, strip reefs of nutrients, and harm marine vertebrates. The state of Hawaii just voted to ban sunscreens containing these ingredients, and Australia should do the same.
Sun protection is important, but not at the cost of natural resources and entire ecosystems. And it's possible to manufacture safe, effective sunscreens that don't contain these ingredients, in addition to using mechanical barriers like clothing to shield delicate skin. By promoting reef-safe sunscreens, the Australian government could protect a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the benefit of future generations.
Tell Australia's parliament to take action today for the benefit of tomorrow: Ban sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate!
