These Men Brutally Killed Animals for Fun and the Government Still Lets Them Own a Gun

Unfortunately, there is no crystal ball when it comes to being able to predict who among us is capable of becoming a mass killer. There's no hand reading or blood test that can tell authorities, with 100% certainty, that someone, sooner or later, will commit a school shooting. That science may never exist, but in the meantime, there are signals that law enforcement can use that might help keep us safe.

Study after study has shown that people who abuse animals are likely to progress to violence towards humans. That is especially true when it comes to the histories of mass shooters who have a much higher rate of incidents of animal cruelty.

Take some of the most infamous school shooters of the past three decades: Kip Kinkel, Oregon's Thurston High shooter, is said to have decapitated and immolated cats. By their own admission, Columbine killers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold mutilated animals for fun. And the shooter of perhaps the most devastating school shooting in recent memory, Nikolas Cruz the shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., had an Instagram filled with posts of dead creatures.

This is not just a "boys will be boys situation" — this is a warning sign that these children are capable of serious violence. According to one investigation which analyzed school shooters between 1988 and 2012 and their history of animal cruelty, nearly 50% of those studied had previously committed acts of animal abuse.

And it's not just school shooters, domestic abusers and serial killers also display a higher incidence of animal abuse in their background.

But despite that fact, convicted animal abusers can still purchase a gun, putting a legally acquired lethal weapon in the hands of someone who has demonstrated they have no respect for life. This madness must end, and citizens like you can help.

Care2 needs your voice to make our country safer. Please join us and demand that Congress pass a bill banning those convicted of violence against animals from ever owning guns.

We cannot continue to sit idly by allowing our politicians to get away with doing nothing. Please sign the petition and ask Congress to take action now!
