Meanwhile, countries across Europe and Asia enjoy fast, affordable, national rail systems that make travel easier, greener, and far more accessible.
Americans want alternatives. The problem is that our alternatives are neither affordable nor efficient. In most cases, flying is still cheaper and faster than taking a train, which is a stunning failure of national transportation policy in a country with such enormous resources.

With Thanksgiving approaching, we are seeing a surge in demand for buses and trains as flight cancellations, delays, and government-mandated flight cuts pushed travelers to the ground. Amtrak is already anticipating a record-breaking number of riders for holiday travel, even as ticket prices spike by 10-16% because our system cannot handle the demand. Bus prices are rising too.
The U.S. should not be bailing out airlines year after year while leaving the rest of our transportation system stuck in the 20th century. We deserve options that are fast, sustainable, affordable, and reliable – just like millions of people rely on every day in Japan, France, Spain, South Korea, Germany, and beyond.
