Tell Norway to Protect Reindeer From Speeding Trains

  • von: Susan Bird

In Norway every year, speeding freight trains slam into hundreds of reindeer. They kill them outright or, worse, injure them so badly they must be euthanized. Sometimes it takes hours before this happens. In November 2017, a heartbreaking 110 reindeer died this way -- but this doesn't have to keep happening.

Please sign this petition urging Norway's Minister of Transport and Communications, Ketil Solvik-Olsen, to find a way to use fencing and modern technology to stop these unnecessary deaths.

Mr. Solvik-Olsen -- We, the undersigned, were shocked and saddened to learn that more than 100 reindeer died on your nation's railroad tracks a few weeks ago. Reindeer make us think of Rudolph, the most famous Christmas reindeer, and we are heartbroken.

The news photos showing reindeer bodies heaped by the side of the tracks is almost too much to take -- especially during the Christmas season. Please do something about it.

We beg you to take action to stop this annual slaughter. News reports indicate that every year, between 200 and 600 reindeer die in this tragic manner. Last year alone, a combined total of 2,016 elk, moose, sheep and reindeer were killed by speeding trains in your country.

Please erect more fencing. Investigate the best ways to use digital technology to keep herders and train drivers connected in real time so trains can slow down when they need to. We have GPS now to help us with vehicular traffic -- how about applying similar technology to resolve this problem?

Christmas isn't Christmas without reindeer. Take action to save yours. Show the world you care. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
