The Erie County Fair runs for 12 days every August in Hamburg, NY. It's the best "12 days of summer," but not for the horses and exhibitors competing at the outdoor horse show arena. Their outdoor arena is extremely unlevel, with dips and divots, and very slick and uneven footing when wet. Horses and riders put themselves at risk while performing in this arena, which has been shortened in size and seemingly uncared for.
Celebrating agriculture is a huge part of the Erie County Fair, and the various horse shows that compete during the fair are contributing factors to the lure that is the fair! Our horses and exhibitors deserve to have a safe and level arena to work in if the fair would like to increase the number of horse show entries. Over the last few years of speaking with other fellow horse show competitors, we have all agreed that this particular arena is in dire need of repair and many of us have chosen to take our beloved animals elsewhere to show. We once loved to show at the fair, and truly want to support it again, but only if the Erie County Agricultural Society could address this safety issue for our prized animals.
