Criticize Export of Ill-Treated Livestock

"Australia is known for its lack of regulation in livestock transport. The main destination for Australian livestock is the Middle East, where there is a lack of animal protection laws to ensure proper treatment and humane slaughter. Iran has only a few poorly enforced laws in place to protect pets, with animals raised for food enjoying even less protection.

During transportation to Iran, livestock face poor treatment aboard cramped ships. Tight conditions, long journeys, and rough seas can result in animals falling on top of one another, causing broken legs, crushed ribcages, and internal injuries. The animals on board are often left without food, water, and veterinary aid for days at a time. This can result in death due to dehydration, starvation, or disease. High temperatures and poor ventilation aboard transport ships also cause heat stroke, which is sometimes responsible for mass livestock death.

In order to ensure proper treatment of Australian livestock, it is imperative that laws are established for humane transport. Additionally, Australia should take responsibility to certify that all cruelty is avoided once the animals reach their destination. By neglecting to rectify past mistakes, livestock will be put in danger of injury, disease, and death due to poor handling. Your signature will condemn the move, which was made without consideration for the possibility of animal suffering."
