Save the bees, protect our food system

The American bumblebee, native to Canada, is facing imminent extinction. Scientists estimate the population of bumblebees has dropped by 99 percent in the past 30 years, which can contribute to cascading impacts throughout the entire ecosystem.

But you can do something about it right now. Add your name to this petition to ask Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change to protect bees' health by banning harmful insecticides and herbicides.

It's not just the American bumblebee. Other species of bees, butterflies and pollinators are disappearing at an alarming rate globally. This is due in large part to the use of harmful insecticides, diseases, habitat loss, and climate change.

The disappearance of pollinators is bad news for the entire food chain. Scientists estimate that 1/3 of the food we eat globally requires bees and other insects for pollination. Without them, our food system will be in serious trouble.

It's time to ban harmful insecticides and herbicides such as neonicotinoids and glyphosate. Their use in agriculture and to spray forests is devastating bees, butterflies and other insect populations, on a massive scale.

Right now, there is no comprehensive legislation in Canada to protect these critical catalysts and underpinners of our entire food chain. A number of European countries have already banned harmful insecticides that remain legal in Canada. It's time to catch up in protecting our food system and the natural world.

Ask Steven Guilbeault to take action now by adding your name!
