Implementation of A bottle and can deposit program in Florida to create incentive to recycle and reduce litter in our state.

Litter is more than just an eyesore. It is a costly to clean up. It impacts our quality of life and economic development. It eventually ends up in our lakes, rivers and oceans affecting wildlife and ecosystems.

Eleven states currently have a deposit incentive. California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon & Vermont. Programs in these states encourage people to return the items to the store usually through automated recycling machines for cash. It creates a reason to not throw it out the window or in the trash that ends up in landfills. It also creates motivation and income for voluntary litter pick up.

Why does Florida need a deposit recycling program?
Recycling deposit programs in Florida would decrease the amount of roadside litter, clean up the environment, and conserve energy and natural resources.

Ideally this should be the standard in all states. Europe has had mandatory recycling in place since the 1990's. Hopefully one day we can get there too. If your state doesn't have a petition for a recycling incentive, start your own.
