Alberta: Protect Your Grizzlies!

There are just 691 grizzly bears left in Alberta, where there were once 6,000.

While no longer hunted (since 2006) logging and oil/gas exploration continues to fragment their shrinking habitat and human-caused mortalities remain too much.

The government of Alberta has listed the grizzly bears and threatened, but the recovery plan isn't fully funded of implemented, the recovery team was disbanded and continued industrial development is being approved in what the government zoned as "critical" wildlife habitat.

Alberta must do better for its grizzlies -- their habitat need to be protected. Alberta can save its grizzlies, but only if the government is held accountable.

Tell Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach to fund and enact enforceable measure to protect grizzly bears and their habitat.
Dear Premier Stelmach,

As you know, there are just 691 grizzly bears left in Alberta where there were once 6,000. While your government thankfully suspended hunting in 2006, and last June listed the grizzly bear as threatened, habitat loss from logging and oil/gas exploration continues.

[Your comments will be added here]

Alberta must act now to save the remaining grizzlies and protect enough habitat for their recovery.

I ask that you:

- Ensure grizzly bear habitat protection is considered in all development and regional land-use planning decisions;

- Protect grizzly bear habitat through the establishment of parks and reduction of industrial roads;

- Include a dedicated budget for grizzly bear recovery in the provincial budget; and

-Provide funding for a comprehensive network of programs focused on helping local governments and citizens to reduce grizzly bear mortalities and conflicts.

Grizzlies need your help now. Please do everything you can to protect this declining and iconic species.
