Tell President Obama: Don't Cave to the Automakers
Thanks to President Obama's historic agreement with manufacturers to create the first increase in fuel efficiency standards in thirty years, we are witnessing the transformation of the U.S. auto industry. Instead of focusing only on gas guzzlers, automakers are building the cleaner vehicles consumers want. Shuttered auto plants from Delaware, to Michigan, to California are re-opening, bringing jobs home to the United States.
But even as automakers are seeing the benefits of clean vehicles, the auto industry is opening fire on the next round of fuel-efficiency and pollution standards.
Tell President Obama to stand up to auto industry pressure and support a 60 mpg standard for 2025 that will save us money at the pump, boost the economy, curb carbon pollution, and help end our dangerous addiction to oil.
Dear President Obama,
Two years ago, you brokered a historic agreement that ended decades of gridlock on standards to make our cars more fuel efficient and less polluting. By moving the auto industry forward on clean, advanced vehicle technologies, you began a historic transformation of this important industry.
The recent auto bailouts have demonstrated the urgent need to accelerate this makeover in order to save jobs and restore the U.S. auto industry to global leadership. Fortunately, you have the opportunity to do just that by raising the next phase of pollution and fuel efficiency standards to 60 mpg by 2025.
According to analysis by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation, a 60 mpg standard is attainable, affordable and delivers the greatest oil savings and pollution reductions. I urge you to stand up to the industry lobbyists that say it can't be done. They said this about air bags, seat belts and catalytic converters, and all of these advances have made cars safer and cleaner. Support the right standard for this country and deliver 60 mpg.
