Stop Puppy Mills in the state of Texas

    11 Facts About Puppy Mills:
  • The breeding dogs are bred as often as possible to increase profits and probably will never see life outside of the puppy mill. The owners rarely pay attention to the health or happiness of the dogs.
  • Puppy mills often generate health problems for the dogs they are selling. The puppies may have immediate health problems such as respiratory infections or pneumonia and some even have genetic diseases that show up years later.
  • Breeding dogs suffer continuously, imprisoned in small cramped cages, often soiled with their own excrement, breeding litter after litter till they can no longer reproduce.
  • No states have laws against a breeding kennel legally keeping dozens of dogs in cages for their entire lives, if food, water, and shelter are provided.
  • Thousands of puppy mills aren't even regulated or inspected by the USDA, since many of them sell directly to the public.
  • The average puppy mill has between 65 and 75 animals housed in hutch-style cages with wire floors. The waste drops to the ground below and accumulates beneath the cage where flies and other gross things fester.
  • Dogs at puppy mills are often not actually purebred, and the breeders sometimes lie about lineage records.
  • Dogs housed in indoor facilities deal with equally terrible conditions, with ammonia vapors and odors permeating badly aired buildings.
  • Solid surfaces aim to protect the legs of puppies, but as they mature and scout out their surroundings, feet and legs often fall through wire floors designed to allow excrement to fall through. The resulting injuries compound their misery.
  • Unlicensed puppy mills often sell puppies at six weeks of age even though federal laws prohibit licensed mills from selling puppies under eight weeks of age

To whom it may concern,

We the undersigned, of ages 13 to 25, have joined in attempt to pass a law or bill in the state of Texas to improve conditions in Puppy Mills across the state. Recently, there has been an increase of such mills, which narrowly dodge regulations in Texas. Dogs in these mills are malnourished and mistreated, having crippling injuries and diseases overlooked by breeders. They are then sold to the public, whom lack knowledge of these injuries or diseases, and are left dumbfounded when the animals become ill or even die.

According the the Dallas News, "the Better Business Bureau reported that Internet sales have become one of the main ways for breeders to avoid federal inspections, which are infrequent." In the least we ask you to attempt to increase these inspections, for the sake of catching these criminals and saving these defenseless animals.

Recently, there have been concerns that puppy mills have become a major problem in Texas. News stations nationwide, including NBC, have been reporting that Texas may become the next "puppy mill capitol of the United States". The Texas Humane Legislation Network  is already working with the Texas Veterinary Medical Association  to draft a bill to be introduced in the next legislative session. This bill would set regulations for large commercial breeders in Texas. Again, we ask in the least that you deeply consider passing this bill.

However, largely we ask you to attempt to pass any sort of a bill making state regulations to improve the conditions of puppy mills. Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and Missouri are among the states that already have  regulations in place to keep puppy mills under control. Texas, however, currently has no such regulations.  We ask that you take this as an example of the compassion that Texas certainly should hold as well. There is absolutely no reason these animals should be treated so cruelly.

Because we are young adults, our opinions and voices often go overlooked. However, we would like you to know that we are fully adamant about helping improve the state of Texas, as its students now, and its leaders in the future. We believe one of the best ways to begin doing so is by urging you to help these animals.

We greatly appreciate your time and attention.
