Sharks are at critical population levels in our oceans and very seriously threatened with extinction. We need to stop the needless slaughter of these animals simply for their fins! In China it is a delicacy that has no meaning anymore, it was once difficult to catch a shark and therefore held in high regard, those days are over. Massive fish factories with very sophisticated fish finders and catching techniques have taken away the challenge of this elusive catch, sharks are no longer hard to get.
The shark is caught, hauled up on deck (many cases still alive) and all the fins are cut-off including the tail, then dumped back into ocean often still alive as it sinks to the bottom to die. This is appalling and unnecessary, connoisseurs only consider the fins valuable and the bulk of the shark is not wanted. This is a very unsustainable fish practice, and shark populations are being decimated.
Please, sign my petition and tell shark fin merchants and restaurants that Calgary does not tolerate this draconian practice, and offenders will be prosecuted. Let’s stop the black market Shark Fin trade in Calgary now, before it's too late for sharks. Please pass this on, and tell our Mayor what you think. Thank-you.
