New York's Proposed Tax Credit for Pet Parents Is a Great Idea that Helps Animals and People Alike

We love our pets, and we want to give them the best care and the best lives possible. But properly taking care of a pet can be prohibitively expensive - food, medicines, toys, veterinary appointments, and more can really eat into people's wallets. In some cases, people have to give away or decline adopting a pet just because of the expenses alone, and that's sad for everyone involved.

That's why it's so exciting to learn that New York state is considering easing pet-parents' financial burden a little bit! Under a proposed bill, pet owners would be able to claim tax credits for legitimate, verified expenses related to pet care.

Sign the petition to urge New York state to pass this bill, and for other U.S. states to follow suit!

It's important to note that this bill would provide a tax break, not an outright transfer of cash. This is a good plan because, otherwise, people might adopt pets just for the money. But under this proposal, the system would actually be set up to very clearly support pet parents who just want to provide the best lives for their companion animals.

The bill would limit tax credits so that they only apply to expenses for one or two animals - another great provision because it won't encourage hoarding or other harmful practices, like breeding.

Pet-parents could claim tax credits for up to $450 per pet, divided out into $300 for veterinary or medical-related expenses, and $150 for day-to-day needs like carriers, food, litter, leashes and collars, toys, grooming products, and so forth.

This proposal is only good news for pets and their loving parents in New York state. Urge the New York state government to approve this plan, and for the rest of the U.S. states to implement similar measures! Sign the petition!
