Tell Bermuda NOT to Repeal Same-Sex Marriage and Treat Everyone As Equals!!

When a country legalizes same-sex marriage, many people rejoice and celebrate because it is a huge step in the right direction for a country and an all around amazing time.

However, Bermuda has now made the shocking decision to repeal same-sex marriage. The Island's governor, John Rankin approved a bill on Wednesday the 7th of February that reverses a Supreme Court ruling last year that allowed gay marriage.

Now, domestic partnerships are the only thing that is being offered/forced upon gay couples. A domestic partnership is certainly not the same thing as marriage! Married couples are seen as family while those in a domestic partnership are not. Married couples automatically inherit each other's assets upon death, and these assets are inherited without any taxes incurred. However, this is not the case for domestic partners. You can inherit your partner's assets through a will, but you'll be subject to taxes. Companies sometimes don't have domestic partnerships built into their internal benefits framework the same way they do marriage benefits, so individuals are left to ask for them.

This will have a negative impact on the lives of many in Bermuda. Not to mention the fact that it will cause a strain in tourism in Bermuda because I myself would never travel to Bermuda knowing that they have revoked same-sex marriage and singled out gay people.

Repealing same-sex marriage is like giving someone an amazing gift and then ripping the gift from their hands. It is a cruel attack on human rights and the government should not get away with it. We should all be treated equally regardless of who we love.

Bermuda is a British overseas territory so this is Britain's fight too. Tell Bermuda, Britain, John Rankin, Theresa May and everyone else involved that this is unacceptable and that such an otherwise beautiful and well-respected country should not destroy it's reputation with this inhumane, foolish decision.
