EUBCE Call for action – Make the EU the global leader on Sustainable Carbon

    Carbon is not the enemy

EU Agriculture land needs nurturing to provide Biogenic Carbon

Carbon is a fundamental element of life on Earth: biogenic carbon and organic matter are needed in soil, where land degradation is progressing at a fast rate.

More than 8.5 Mha of marginal land exist in the Southern EU Countries only, and future food and feed production is at risk in this and other EU regions. A very large share of the EU Agricultural land suffers from lack of Organic Carbon and Organic Matter in soil.

Sustainable farming is the enabler of a modern agriculture that can deliver Biogenic Carbon, nutrients and mitigate the impact of Climate Change; improve soil resilience, health and water holding capacity; support bioeconomy growth, and promote biodiversity. The EU needs to nurture agriculture land to make it more resilient to increasing climate pressures in the current global context.

Carbon is obviously not the enemy, it is the fossil CO2 delivered to the atmosphere which is the problem.

We need sustainable Biogenic Carbon for the Net Zero Green Transition

The Bioeconomy can deliver food, feed, bioproducts and biofuels through virtuous sustainable Biogenic Carbon cycles, helping EU in its ‘Net zero Green transition’.

Well-designed bioenergy and bioproduct chains can also implement Carbon Negative solutions which naturally remove Carbon from the atmosphere and use it in soil and products. This nature-based Carbon sequestration is also the most cost-effective approach available today.

Bringing biogenic Carbon back to soils (particularly the most degraded ones), delivering sustainable Carbon-based products together with bioenergy, is possible with current innovation and technologies. This effort must be implemented at both EU and International scale, in the framework of cooperation and sustainable development policies. Such efforts would be fully aligned with the Paris agreement and the EU Green Deal goals.

A Call for action – Make the EU the global leader on Sustainable Carbon

The EUBCE community calls the EU Institutions to:

Further strengthen and accelerate the current efforts to develop ambitious and long-term policies on Carbon Cycles, making the EU the global leader on Sustainable Carbon and the Bioeconomy.
Implement dedicated policies for biogenic and recycled Carbon for industrial use across sectors, to deliver sustainable bioproducts and further strengthen EU’s competitiveness.
Nurture the soil through robust Healthy soil & Carbon-based initiatives that are key for Carbon removal, sequestration and use.
Solutions to address these challenges are available today: they can be immediately implemented at large and local scale, offering a unique contribution to the Green Transition. The EUBCE community’s innovation capacity is ready to contribute to this.

We must act now to save European soils, reduce GHG emissions and build a strong and resilient EU Bioeconomy.
