El Salvador's New Prison Gives Inmates Less Space Than Cattle in the EU

The president of El Salvadore has been boasting about the country's new mega prison. The prison, which is designed to be intentionally overcrowded, allows each inmate a fraction of what is expected for humane incarceration - of people or even animals. This prison is a clear human rights violation!

When at capacity, inmates will have so little space in their shared cells that they will have less than half the minimum space required under EU law to transport cattle by road.

This prison opens at a time when El Salvador is in the midst of a humanitarian crisis. The president's security forces have spent the last year "cracking down" on supposed gang violence. However, human rights advocates say this has resulted in widespread state-sanctioned abuse.

The country already has the world's highest incarceration rate. Now, it's estimated that more than 2 percent of Salvadorian adults are likely incarcerated.
