China: stop cat and dog slaughter

Cats are treated as part of the family in most households in China. How can you imagine that these wonderful animals and companions of our people are tortured so badly? Every day cats are hooked by the neck, skinned and thrown into boiling water, just to be made into a meal in Guangdong Province, the place claimed to be one of the most developed provinces in China. It saddens us that in this day and age animals are still being treated in this cruel manner.
Cats are stolen from households or residential areas around the country and shipped into in trucks inside cages that do not even allow them to stretch their bodies.  With their arms and legs broken, most of the cats are severely injured and starved when arriving to their destined place - Guangdong Province, in southern China. Here they are sold to restaurants in different cities of this area.

Cats owners and carers have been fighting to end this monster-like business of stealing and slaughtering cats, but unfortunately due to lack of legislation of animal protection, they can hardly fight against the cruelty. The people in this business are indifferent to the suffering of the cats and their carers, even claiming that it is their individual right to choose what to eat. But this is absolute nonsense. No one should claim his right by torturing and abusing poor
animals, let alone stealing and eating others' pets without any consideration of their suffering.

Now that we got the message that the mayor of Auckland, Newzealand is going to visit Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong province.  We would like to seize this possible opportunity tospeak out our voice urging the Guangdong government to do something stopping their bloody business and the misery on our cats!  We start this petition in order to have this letter published and signed by good people around the world. Then we' re going to print the letter with all signatures on it and have it sent to the mayor of Auckland before Apr. 20 or even sooner.

We express our deep appreciation and thanks to the good people who have signed our petition and support us.

Thank you

Letter to the Mayor of Auckland

Dear Mr. Brown,

We, animal advocates in China, are writing to you to inform you about a horrible situation going on in Guangzhou, in hopes that you will help us with our cause. On hearing of your coming visit to Guangzhou on the 24th of April, we are urging you to deliver a letter to the Guangzhou Government to tell them to stop the selling of cat and dog meat at markets.
With Guangzhou being the Sister City of Auckland, we believe that this is an important issue that we must address.

Cats and dogs get slaughtered daily to provide cat and dog meat markets in Guangzhou. This, among many other cruel animal abuse acts happening, is what we are desperately trying to stop. Every day there are more than 10,000 cats and 25,000 dogs that are shipped into the Guangdong Province by trucks from around the country. Many of these cats and dogs are pets that have been stolen from their families, to get squeezed into tiny cages and taken to marketplaces where they are subjected to horrible acts. These poor animals get skinned and boiled, and it pains us that in this day and age disgusting things like this are still happening.

We long for a time when animals in China can be treated and respected fairly, and the first step to this happening is the stopping of these horrendous cat and dog meat markets. As they are fairly underground, our aim is to expose these cruel markets to the rest of the world so that these people can be stopped. There truly is no excuse for the brutality happening, and while countless amounts of people have written letters to the Guangzhou Government, we unfortunately have yet to see any change in this situation. We feel deeply for the suffering that our animal friends are subjected to, and also for the distress of those who have lost their beloved pets.

As the mayor of Auckland we are asking for your support where our voices go unheard. We would be very thankful if on your trip to Guangzhou you could deliver a letter conveying our message to the Government. This would help us substantially in our quest for saving all of the cats and dogs in Guangzhou. Thank you very much in advance.

Yours sincerely

Animal advocates in Guangzhou and among the cities of China
