New York says "NO" to Amazon!

After a series of shady deals made behind closed doors, Amazon announced that it would be splitting its new HQ2 between Crystal City, Virginia and Long Island City, New York City. For the latter city, both NY Governor Andrew "Amazon" Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio have patted themselves on the back while singing praises of Amazon's supposed benefits for the city, like the alleged 25,000 jobs they claim the company will provide. And so, Amazon will be receiving over $2.8 billion and a helipad (yes, you read that correctly) from both the state and the city. Note: this is a company where Jeff Bezos, the CEO and richest man in the world, has a net worth of over $160 billion.

With this ridiculous decision, de Blasio and Cuomo have clearly shown that they do  NOT value the needs of New Yorkers. The failing education system, the overstressed MTA in Queens (which will only have to service even more commuters with the arrival of Amazon), homeless services, and the public housing system that is literally falling apart are just a few areas in NYC that could have used that money more wisely. Meanwhile, Amazon has made no guarantees that it will be hiring locally, which means we can only look forward to further gentrification of our neighborhoods and displacement of our communities as rents will inevitably rise.

Our politicians need to know that New Yorkers say NO to Amazon, a company that has a consistent record of exploiting its workers and destroying the neighborhoods it forces its way into.

We demand that the politicians invest in us New Yorkers instead, who work tirelessly everyday to make and create this city. We demand that NY politicians also say NO to Amazon.
