This Legislator Can't Wear Her Religious Headwear in Congress

Representative-elect Ilhan Omar is a Muslim woman who wears religious headwear. But it turns out that even though the U.S. likes to talk about religious freedom, that freedom apparently doesn't extend to Muslims in Congress. There is a 181-year-old ban on any kind of headwear on the floor.

Please join me in supporting Omar in changing this policy that is restricting her constitutional right to practice her religion.

The rule was apparently made when Congress was only white men and was meant to keep them from wearing hats on the floor. But things have changed. Congress is more diverse than ever and that's a good thing! If we are truly a country that cares about religious freedom then that should be represented in Congress.

Omar should be able to wear her religious headwear on the Congressional floor if she chooses. Forcing her to take it off would be unconstitutional.

Let's end this outdated rule now!
