Demand for Homeless Assistance in Clear Lake, Now!

We have seen an explosion in homelessness in Clear Lake. With a minimum of 50 homeless people identified, the tent encampments at the I-45/El Dorado Blvd. and I-45/Clear Lake City Blvd. underpass are a visual reminder of a human condition that continues to go unaddressed by the City of Houston and Harris County. We are fed up with the City's failure to address homelessness, and their consequent and consistent INactivity, attempting to rationalize and justify the lack of response due to litigation. So, nothing changes if nothing changes. Meanwhile, down south in Clear Lake, violence, rampant drug use, and those suffering with severe mental health disorders are living in unsanitary conditions, with rodents, and a steady mountain of filth and trash greet residents and visitors to our community. We are the gateway to NASA. We can send humans to the moon and beyond, yet we cannot provide humans here on Earth affordable housing, or a streamlined access to social services to address issues that continue to define their chronic homeless condition--lack of affordable housing, mental health issues, addictions, and unemployment. We are geographically disconnected from services the City of Houston, Coalition for the Homeless, and established non-profit organizations like The Beacon, SEARCH, Salvation Army, and Star of Hope can provide.

This is Clear Lake and we demand change now. Specifically, we, as tax paying citizens of Houston and Harris County, demand:
a designated caseworker, known as a "navigator", to track, connect with, and provide resources, transportation, and services for the homeless population here in Clear Lake. A navigator designated for and assigned to Clear Lake exclusively, funded by the City or County, to begin with a caseload of 50 plus homeless individuals, to get them on the housing list, to get them the medical attention they need, to get them the documentation they need, like social security cards, to get them "in the system" for resources and services, like substance abuse treatment. A navigator who is trained and experienced in working with the homeless, experienced in working with those resistant to change, one who knows how to access help for the homeless. We need it. We demand it...now.
