I am a student currently pursuing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, and science has always been my passion. The mysteries of the natural world captivate my friends and me, and we consider chemistry to be at the core of scientific exploration. This school year, we were faced with the concerning news that the IB Program will discontinue not only the IB Chemistry class for 10th graders but also other IB classes for our cohort, leaving us without options to take advanced courses in critical subjects.
Traditionally, students in our region have had the opportunity to engage with and face the challenges of various IB courses, including Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and more. However, due to recent regional decisions, these courses have been phased out for us, making way for the introduction of Advanced Placement (AP) classes next year. This shift means our class will uniquely miss the chance to excel in advanced-level IB subjects that previous and future students will have access to.
This decision not only disrupts our academic plans but also hinders our preparation for college and future academic endeavors. Students like myself, who aspire to pursue science-related fields in higher education, rely heavily on the rigor of IB coursework to lay a solid academic foundation. Without access to these advanced classes, we may find ourselves at a disadvantage in the competitive landscape of college applications and unprepared for the demands of rigorous college programs.
We understand that these decisions are often made at a regional level and can be beyond the control of individual schools. However, we strongly believe that there should be consideration for students currently in the pipeline, ensuring that no one is left behind due to the timing of these curricular changes.
Therefore, we are petitioning the regional educational authorities to reconsider and extend the provision of all IB classes for one more year. This adjustment will help bridge the gap for current students and uphold the educational standards we strive for.
