South Carolina Wants to Let Inmates Die in Hurricane Florence

  • by: Care2 Team

Despite the fact that Hurricane Florence is on its way to South Carolina and will wreak havoc on the state, nearly 1000 inmates have no choice but to stay. There is a mandatory evacuation of the area and yet officials want the 1000 inmates and 100 staff members to stay behind anyway, showing just how little they value human life.

Sign the petition to demand these inmates and staff are allowed to evacuate immediately!

We should have learned this lesson before: the same thing happened during Hurricane Katrina, where thousands of inmates were left in water up to their chests in the dark with no food or water for days. In fact, a Human Rights Watch report interviewed 1000 of those inmates and found some of the most horrifying stories of terror. 517 of those prisoners' bodies were never found.

This country has the highest incarceration rate of anywhere in the world and the way we exploit our prisoners is truly astounding. It's shocking that we apparently care so little for their lives that we would let them stay in a zone that has been evacuated and risk the same fate as the inmates in Katrina.

Please sign this petition and share it right away to convince South Carolina to save these 1000 prisoners and 100 employee's lives.

The cost should not matter, these are human lives. Many of the prisoners at this site have not even seen a judge and are in there on drug charges or other minor and non-violent crimes. They do not deserve to suffer and die.
