Tell Bank of America to Stop Financing the Private Prisons Detaining Asylum Seekers

Trump's crackdown on immigration has put a staggering number of people in detention and has torn children and parents apart at the border. It's a dark moment.

But we don't need to stand by and idly watch — we can challenge this inhumanity and beat it.

Nearly 75% of those detained are held in private prisons, whose stock prices have soared against the backdrop of Trump's zero-tolerance and family separation policies.

Many detention centers have adopted cruel and dehumanizing cost-cutting practices, like subpar medical care. Nearly one in four immigrant detainees has reported being subject to abuse or aggression by guards or ICE officials.

These facilities can't operate without the financial support of many of the big banks. Top Wall Street banks, including Bank of America, have raked in combined millions of dollars in fees and interest from financing the companies that run these centers.

We can stop this. Earlier this year, after pressure from activists, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo committed to severing ties with CoreCivic and GEO Group, the two largest companies that run detention centers and other private prisons. These victories are the result of two years of sustained organizing led by immigrant families, who showed up together to force these major Wall Street firms to reckon with the human impact of their financing practices.

Of the top six banks in the US, Bank of America is currently the only one that continues to finance both of these private prison giants.

In the past, Bank of America has shown it can do better after it stopped financing manufacturers of military-style guns. And not long ago, its CEO cosigned a letter to the Trump administration decrying harsh immigration policies. But the words ring hollow as long as actions don't follow.

Add your name to tell Bank of America to stop financing for-profit immigrant detention centers. Let's shine a light on this complicity, and let's put a stop to it.
