Tell the federal government: Turn climate promises into action!

Canada has an unfortunate history of making strong climate promises, setting ambitious targets and then failing to deliver. We need strong laws that make sure that this doesn't happen again.

A new Climate Accountability Law would help incorporate transparency and accountability into Canada's climate policies, ensuring that successive governments actually meet their greenhouse gas reduction targets.

A strong Climate Accountability Law for Canada should create an independent committee to monitor the government's progress on reducing emissions, with 5-year targets and regular reporting requirements.

A law that includes these measures would ensure that governments are held to account if they don't do enough to achieve ambitious long-term targets.

Countries around the world are taking measures to plan for climate action the same way they do financial planning — with budgets, long- and short-term plans, and independent audits to ensure they stay on track. In places like the U.K., these strategies have been vital in helping governments achieve their climate goals.

Climate change was a central issue in Canada's 2019 election, and multiple federal parties made commitments to introduce new measures for climate accountability. Now it's time to call on our elected leaders to follow through on these climate promises.

Please join us in calling on Prime Minister Trudeau and the other party leaders to deliver on their commitments and enact a Climate Accountability Law for Canada.
Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,

Climate change was the central issue of the 2019 federal election, and I was glad to hear your commitments to ramp up Canada's climate action and to set us on a course to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

In particular, I expect you to deliver on your promise to turn this long-term goal into legislated five-year targets developed with the help and oversight of an independent panel of experts, and to develop plans to achieve these targets. This model has been successful in helping the United Kingdom meet its climate targets and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to levels not seen since the 1890s.

The New Democratic Party, the Bloc Québécois and the Green Party have all made similar pledges to set interim targets and to take similar steps for aggressive progress towards reducing Canada's GHG emissions. There are clear opportunities for collaboration within this Parliament to put in place a rigorous and ambitious system of planning requirements and expert advice to ensure that current and future Canadian governments take real action on climate change.

I look forward to seeing laws that establish a science-based, arms-length climate committee and the legislating of interim 5-year targets based on the committee's advice.

Sincerely,
