We already know that
factory farms and meat farming are bad for animals and the environment. But it turns out that meat farming is also
unsustainable financially! In fact, animal agriculture is such an unstable industry, it requires
huge subsidies from governments to artificially prop it up. For example, in the European Union, a new study shows that the EU gave meat and dairy producers
€39 billion in just the year 2020 alone!
Sign the petition to demand an end to these outrageous subsidies for a cruel, unhealthy, Earth-destroying industry! The report shows that EU subsidies to
just producers of beef and lamb (let alone other livestock farms!) was between
580 and 554 times more than the subsidies granted to plant-based proteins like nuts, seeds, and legumes. Why?
Why spend tens of billions of euros every year to prop up an industry that's predicated on death, destruction, and harm?Livestock production requires incredible amounts of resources, especially water. It is a major contributor to
global carbon dioxide emissions and climate change. Run-off from farms with fertilizer, medications, and feces poisons waterways with nitrates and leads to horrific pollution in surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, animals are bred to be slaughtered and served up on our plates, subjecting them to
unfathomable suffering during their short, captive lives. Locked up in small spaces, forced to reproduce so that their offspring may be eaten, and
treated as objects without feelings or pain - this is unconscionable. And it only gets worse. For example, to create milk for humans to drink, farmers forcibly impregnate cows so they will begin producing milk for their young. But when their babies are born, farmers whisk them away to become the next generation of the machine - or to be slaughtered as veal.
It's also unhealthy. More and more studies are showing that eating animals likely contribute to serious health risks. This includes cancers, heart disease, and even dementia.
There are zero reasons to keep this cruel, unsustainable, and unhealthy industry afloat. If meat and dairy producers are struggling this much, maybe it's a sign that we're ready, as a society, to move towards
a more humane, compassionate, and eco-friendly world.Sign the petition to demand that the EU cease its overwhelming subsidies to the harmful, cruel meat and dairy industries. If it's going to subsidize anything, that should be plant-based proteins that are Earth-friendly, healthy, and prioritize animal welfare!
