5G is rolling out in cities across the U.S., and San Francisco city leaders can make decisions now to support the availability of 5G wireless service in our local community. If you want to help bring ultra-fast 5G to San Francisco, it is critical that your voice be heard today.
As the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic highlights, reliable connectivity has become essential to our daily lives. As a result of the pandemic, many people have lost their jobs or transitioned to working from home and many students are learning remotely rather than in-person. Reliable connectivity is necessary to enable people to connect to their friends, family, colleagues and government services. It also allows doctors to see their patients via video conferencing. All of this is possible only in areas that have a robust and reliable communications network.
This next generation of wireless infrastructure can facilitate an entirely new type of home broadband service, opening a new option for reliable high-speed internet access. This technology can also help bridge the digital divide and move towards digital equity, providing new connectivity and newfound opportunities for people in San Francisco. Solving the digital divide requires action on three pillars: increasing broadband affordability, adoption and access. Each is vital to solving the problem before us. Greater access fosters greater affordability, and greater adoption.
5G can help facilitate essential connectivity and take it to the next level. Imagine students having the ability to "interact" with atoms from their virtual classroom using VR/AR technology or medical professionals at the UCSF Medical Center leveraging 3-D scans to better treat patients. But 5G isn't just the next "G" in your phone — it's a societal game-changer on par with the advent of electric power a century ago.
And just like a century ago, 5G's greatest breakthroughs have yet to be imagined.
But to make 5G a reality, and make San Francisco a connected city, our elected leaders need to know there's widespread public support. We are a city full of visionaries, creators, teachers and innovators, we face our challenges head on and work to find bold solutions. To build momentum to bring this cutting-edge technology to residents and businesses throughout the city, it's important your leaders see letters of support from community members like you.
Dear [Municipal Leader],
As a local community member, I'm writing to urge you to fast track the 5G network for San Francisco. The benefits to people who live and work in San Francisco, to local businesses and to the entire community are too great to let delays get in the way:
This is your chance not only to deliver for your constituents, but to demonstrate thought leadership and be part of transforming our region into a national 5G leader. Please do whatever you can to help accelerate the 5G rollout for San Francisco.
