Subject: Keep the EPA's existing safeguards in place, and do not put our lives at risk.
Dear Decisionmaker,
I am writing today as a New Mexican to ask you to keep our public health safeguards intact. I will not allow conversations about protections for the air we breathe and the water we drink to be defined by dollars and cents for a few well-connected industries.
My access to clean water and clean air shouldn’t be based on where I live. National protections, enforced by the EPA, promote the public health of all of our people.
While we have made progress over the years, many communities, often low-income, rural and communities of color, still lack access to safe and clean water, clean air, and the quality of life they deserve. Strong guidelines and safeguards from the EPA are needed to fight environmental injustice and ensure that states and municipalities do all they can to work with these communities to ensure access to clean water and improve public health.
We can have a healthy environment and a robust economy. We need the EPA to stand up for people, public health and the environment - not for polluters and special interests.
The EPA's right to protect the public was affirmed decades ago by Congress, under the Clean Air Act. But the law is only as strong as its implementation. As you consider your response to Executive Orders 13777, 13771, and 13783, I ask that you keep the EPA's existing safeguards in place, and do not put our lives at risk.
