Trump Administration Seizes Congresswoman's Phone and Passport, Raided Her Home, and Seeks to Deport Her

Donald Trump has made it clear for a long time that he detests U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. Elected in 2018, she has been a prominent voice for progressive causes, a strong woman of color, and has unabashedly stood up against Trump. And, to Donald Trump, all of that is intolerable.

Now, he's escalated his attacks on her to a previously unprecedented degree. Despite the fact that she is a sitting member of Congress, was elected by the people, and is up for re-election again in less than 3 weeks, his administration has directed federal agents to raid her Washington, D.C. home, and now seeks to revoke her U.S. citizenship.

The timing of this attack is striking. If Donald Trump had legitimate concerns, don't you think he could have pursued them at any other time, instead of just 3 weeks before the pivotal Midterm Elections? For example, the U.S. Department of Justice has generally refrained from major investigation-related actions against political candidates within 60 days of an upcoming election.

The timing isn't the only thing that's alarming. It's also the level of intensity. Trump's team sent federal agents to raid her home, afterwards carrying out boxes labeled "Seized Property Evidence." Next, they confiscated her phone and U.S. passport, as well as her personal computer and notebooks. Now, they've even subpoenaed her relatives. Reporters have learned that this is part of a larger attempt to strip Rep. Omar of her U.S. citizenship and then, ultimately, to deport her.

Trump allies are pretending something is wrong with the citizenship paperwork that Rep. Omar's father filed decades ago, when she was still a child. She and her family were refugees from Somalia. But other organizations have previously concluded there were no issues and no fraud or misconduct.

Why is the Trump administration putting all of this effort into publicly targeting an elected member of Congress just before she's up for re-election, instead of arresting members of the Epstein child-trafficking network? Trump's Department of Justice still hasn't released all of the unredacted files, in violation of the law. And it still hasn't arrested any additional men and women who perpetrated these sex crimes and participated in his friend Jeffrey Epstein's network. In fact, they're stonewalling further investigations into Epstein's ranch in New Mexico where officials believe dead children were buried.

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal from Washington summarized the situation clearly: "To use federal law enforcement resources to raid the home of a sitting Member of Congress weeks before an election is a dangerous sign of an authoritarian president who will stop at nothing to distract you from his deep unpopularity with the American people."

What is happening right now with Trump's attacks on Rep. Omar should terrify all of us. This is not a normal situation and has no precedent in U.S. political history. If he can attempt to strip a Congresswoman of her citizenship in order to deport her, seize her passport, and raid her home, what can he do to an everyday average American? What could he do to anyone else?
