The Arctic Ocean Must Be Off-Limits For All Future Oil and Gas Drilling

  • by: WWF

The Arctic Ocean is one of the most pristine and fragile places left on the planet. It is home to an array of endangered species, including polar bears and bowhead whales, and provides subsistence resources for Native communities in Alaska.

Despite widespread public support from Americans who want to protect the Arctic Ocean and its important ecosystems from the dangers of oil and gas activities, and a federal court ruling which reinstates the Obama-era protections, there are ongoing efforts to open 120 million acres of the Arctic Ocean to oil and gas development.

We cannot allow oil and gas drilling in this region.

The Stop Arctic Ocean Drilling Ac, introduced by Rep. Jared Huffman (CA-2), would ban any new or renewed leases for exploration, development or production of natural gas, oil and all other minerals located in the Arctic Ocean Planning Areas of the Outer Continental Shelf. Effectively, this legislation would make the Arctic off-limits for all future oil and gas drilling.

Continuing to open up the Arctic Ocean to risky oil and gas drilling is precisely the opposite step we should be taking. Congress must step in and act to permanently protect the Arctic Ocean.

Send a message to your representative asking them to cosponsor the Stop Arctic Ocean Drilling Act (H.R. 544) and protect the unique and rich wildlife and communities that depend on this environment.

Please cosponsor the Stop Arctic Ocean Drilling Act and help protect the Arctic from the destructive impacts that future oil and gas development would certainly bring.
