50 million girls are likely to become child brides by 2030. Together, we can help stop this.

12 million girls marry before the age of 18 each year – almost one every 2 seconds. Child marriage continues to rob millions of girls around the world of their childhood.

Early marriage is a violation of a child's human rights.

The practice stems from a range of complex social, cultural and economic reasons, and it denies girls their right to make vital decisions about their sexual health and well-being. Girls who are forced to marry early are more likely to experience violence, abuse, forced sexual relations, and are more vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases. It also drastically reduces their chances of finishing their education and school gives girls choices and opportunities in life, allowing them to play an active role in their community.

That's why Plan International Australia is working with girls, boys and whole communities to challenge perceptions of child marriage, to change damaging social norms, and to support communities in ending the practice.

Following a year-long campaign by youth groups, and organisations including Plan International Australia, Malawi made a historic amendment to its constitution to fully outlaw child marriage.

Now it's time for all countries to step up and help end child marriage so girls can have a chance to fulfil their potential.
