Make California Fur-Free!

California voters have repeatedly shown deep concern for the well-being of animals, and our state has some of strongest laws and regulations concerning animal welfare. California lawmakers will soon vote on a historic piece of legislation that would build on that track record by ending the sales of new fur products in California.

Every year, more than 100 million animals are raised and killed for their fur. On fur factory farms, animals spend their entire lives in cramped cages, deprived of the ability to engage in natural behaviors only to be crudely gassed or electrocuted at the end. The stress from living in a tiny cage often leads to self-mutilation and infected wounds. In the wild, animals are caught in crippling leg-hold traps for days without food or water. These archaic traps are indiscriminate, often maiming and killing non-target animals, like threatened species and even pet dogs and cats.

Assembly Bill 44 would protect animals from these abuses by making it illegal to sell or manufacture a new fur product in the state. (The measure exempts used fur items and those used for religious purposes). AB 44 recently passed the California Assembly by a wide margin (52-16) and is now headed to the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee!

Sign the petition to show your support for AB 44 to end the sale of cruel fur products in our state. The fur industry is cruel to animals, and poses major threats to our environment.
Subject Line: Help California go fur-free by supporting AB 44

Millions of rabbits, foxes, mink and other wild animals spend their entire lives in cramped cages, deprived of the ability to engage in natural behaviors--only to be crudely gassed or electrocuted at the end. In the wild, animals are caught in crippling leghold traps for days without food or water. AB 44 would make it illegal to sell or manufacture a new fur product in the state.

Not only is the fur industry deeply cruel to animals, it also poses serious environmental threats. On fur factory farms, waste runoff from animals pollutes the soil and waterways. The tanning and dying process uses toxic and carcinogenic chemicals, like chromium and formaldehyde, to prevent the skins from decaying. Consumers' growing concern about this cruelty and environmental degradation, as well as the availability of excellent faux fur alternatives, is leading top fashion brands to move away from animal fur once and for all.
