Washington mega-millionaire wants to cut $5 Billion from childcare, education to give himself a tax break

Washington's capital gains tax on the super-rich is under attack by mega-millionaire Brian Heywood. He paid for I-2109, currently in the legislature, to repeal the capital gains tax - taking nearly $5 billion from child care and education over the next 6 years - just to line his own pockets. We fought hard, together, to pass and protect the capital gains tax, and that fight isn't over. Tell your legislators to REJECT I-2109, so voters can prove that we want the capital gains tax!

Poll after poll shows that Washington voters want WA's wealthiest to pay what they owe in taxes. Poll after poll shows support for the capital gains tax. We know that if I-2109 reaches the ballot in November, Washingtonians will do the right thing and vote to keep the capital gains tax. Right now, we need to make sure the initiative reaches the ballot, by telling our lawmakers to reject I-2109 and let voters decide.

In its first year alone, the capital gains tax brought in nearly $900 million for child care and education. It's projected to bring in nearly $6 billion for kids and families over the next 5 years, while still only impacting the wealthiest 0.2% of Washingtonians. It's a step toward righting decades of wrongs done by our broken tax code. We're proud of the progress we've made, and we're determined to keep moving forward.

I-2109 is an attempt by the super-rich to rig the system in their favor - again. But we're not backing down. We know that Washington needs the capital gains tax, and we know that Washingtonians support the capital gains tax. Tell your lawmakers to reject I-2109 and send the initiative to November's ballot, where voters will prove that we support the capital gains tax.

WA State Lawmakers:

Fewer than 4,000 super-rich people paid it, but the capital gains tax brought in nearly $900 million for child care and education in its first year alone. The capital gains tax on the super-rich is a huge step forward for Washington.

Now, a new initiative, I- 2109, would take more than $5 billion from our kids and families over 6 years and undo the steps we've taken toward a more fair tax code. I'm writing to ask you to reject I-2109 and send it to voters where we will vote NO.

Poll after poll has shown that Washington voters support the capital gains tax on the mega-wealthy. We care about taking steps toward equality, child care access and affordability, safe learning environments, and making sure the super-wealthy pay their share. We've seen how important the capital gains tax is for our families, communities, and the fair tax code that Washington needs.

Thanks to the capital gains tax that applies to just 0.2% of households, more children will have safe places to learn. More parents won't have to choose between their jobs or education and child care. More child care providers and teachers will have fair wages, and schools will be able to make critical safety renovations and keep crucial programming.

I'm asking you to act on behalf of Washingtonians including  kids, families, parents, and schools across our entire state. Reject I-2109 and send it to November's ballot - so voters can prove that we support the capital gains tax. We're proud of the progress we've made as a state, and we're determined to keep moving forward.
