Chocolate Isn't Worth Child Slavery

Every year we spend millions of dollars on sweets for the holidays. Kids go crazy over Halloween-themed, bite-size treats and adults exchange fancy chocolate candies as gifts. But, many people don't know that most of chocolate they consume is made by child workers forced into labor in West Africa.

There are more than 200,000 children who are being forced to work under dangerous and strenuous conditions on cocoa farms. These children have to work long, hard hours harvesting cocoa beans every single day. They are stolen from their homes and sold as servants to cocoa farmers who need labor.

This problem may seem worlds away but it is everywhere. It is evident almost every chocolate bar, truffle, or package sold in stores across the country. Companies must feel the pressure from consumers in order to get this practice eradicated completely. For the holidays this year, help end this horrible trend and pledge to only purchase fair-trade chocolates!
