Tell Congress and the Senate - Stop the War on the Poor

Asking for help when you are down on your luck can be tough. Now Republican lawmakers want to make it even worse.

The Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (or SNAP, formerly referred to as "food stamps") helps low-income people feed themselves and their families. It has also kept millions of Americans out of poverty. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities:

"... SNAP kept 4.8 million people out of poverty in 2013, including 2.1 million children. SNAP lifted 1.3 million children above half of the poverty line in 2013."

Unfortunately, some lawmakers seem to have declared a war on the poor, proposing a blueprint for the federal budget that would would slash food assistance for millions of Americans in the still-recovering economy. State-level proposals are even worse — prohibiting SNAP recipients from buying common food like cans of tuna (Missouri) and further slashing access to food assistance (Kansas).

The worst part? There is "virtually no evidence" to suggest that these policies are even needed. With millions of Americans living in poverty and unsure where their next meal will come from, these cuts aren't just unfounded — they are downright immoral.

Help stop the war on the poor. Urge your US Representative and Senators to reject brutal cuts to food assistance for millions of low-income Americans.

Dear Decision Maker:

I strongly urge you to reject proposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) included in the Republican budget resolution.

SNAP provides vital nutrition assistance to millions of Americans and helped keep 4.8 million Americans out of poverty in 2013 alone. Far from fostering dependence, the program provides a vital lifeline for individuals and families working to make ends meet.
