Moms need emergency pandemic leave RIGHT NOW

The coronavirus is surging; and we've hit a grim milestone: 400,000 lives lost. We know that paid leave helps reduce the spread of COVID-19 and can help end this pandemic sooner.

The last Congress left town without expanding and extending emergency paid leave. This new Congress must fix that mistake and act quickly to renew and expand emergency paid leave by passing President Biden's plan.

President Biden's paid leave plan that will provide 14 weeks of paid sick and family and medical leave to help parents with additional caregiving responsibilities when a child or loved one's school or care center is closed; for people who have or are caring for people with COVID-19 symptoms, or who are quarantining due to exposure; and for people needing to take time to get the vaccine. The plan also provides paid leave to federal workers and will reimburse employers with less than 500 employees for the cost of this leave. This plan will also extend the emergency paid leave benefits until the end of September 2021. While we need a permanent paid leave policy in this county, the Biden emergency paid leave plan is a huge step in the right direction and meets our immediate needs to paid leave right now.

The research is clear: Paid leave will help stop the spread of COVID and help us end this pandemic more quickly.

Tell your members of Congress to quickly pass President Biden's emergency paid leave plan.

Dear Members of 117th Congress:

It is abhorrent and irresponsible that the US Senate, in the last congress, failed to extend emergency paid leave before the 12/31 deadline. Families are now left without one of the most important tools we had for reducing the spread of COVID-19, emergency paid leave despite the fact that emergency leave benefits have been a huge and indisputable win for the country.

Emergency paid leave is linked to a reduction in the spread of COVID-19 by as much as 400 reported cases per day where people are able to use the leave. Failure to extend this benefit means that 31 million parents lost access to paid child care leave at the same time the virus is surging and many schools are operating virtually. It means that 12.4 million parents of color -- including 2.9 million Black parents, 6.8 million Latinx parents, and 1.9 million Asian parents -- lost access to paid leave, further stressing communities of color, which have been hit hardest by the pandemic.

This new Congress must act immediately to pass President Biden's emergency paid leave plan which will extend and expand emergency paid leave. Lives are on the line.
