Tell Congress: Support International Family Planning
Imagine a world in which every woman was able to prevent an unwanted or unintended pregnancy, young people were protected against HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases and universal access to reproductive health care was a reality, not just a right!
Fewer women would die from pregnancy-related causes. Their families would be healthier and communities would be stronger. Developing nations could break the cycle of poverty, better feed their people, and slow deforestation and environmental degradation.
It would mean prosperity -- for people and the planet.
That's why the UN wants to achieve universal reproductive health services by 2015. But to make this a reality, the United States and other donor nations must boost their support for international family planning and reproductive health programs. The U.S., for its part, must increase spending to $1 billion. Instead, opponents are trying to slash spending.

The United Nations has set 2015 as the target year for achieving universal access to family planning and reproductive health care. If we are going to meet that target, the U.S. must fulfill its commitments and increase the level of its international assistance.

There are 215 million women in the developing world who want to avoid a pregnancy, but who are not using a modern method of birth control. These women need access to contraceptives, reproductive health care, and family planning information. Preventing unwanted pregnancies empowers women, saves lives, fights poverty, combats global hunger and helps to protect the environment. Expanding access to contraceptives and reproductive health services is a "win-win" proposition for women, their families, their communities, and the planet.
Too many young people in the developing world are at risk of acquiring a sexually transmitted disease, including HIV-AIDS. They need sexual education and access to condoms.
Access to contraceptives and reproductive health care is an essential right. Make that right a reality.
