National Pet Day: Protect our Pets from Toxic Flame Retardants

The truth is, Americans and our pets are exposed to thousands of chemicals every day, and almost none of them have ever been tested for safety. The current law—which hasn't been updated in nearly 40 years—is so badly broken that EPA is virtually powerless to restrict even known deadly carcinogens like asbestos.

But there is something you can do, right now, to help keep toxic chemicals out of our homes and away from our families and pets. A new bill in Congress—the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act—is our best chance in a generation to fix this broken policy.

Take Action: This National Pet Day, tell Congress to support stronger toxic chemical controls.
Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing today to urge you to support Senator Udall's new chemical safety bill, the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act.

Americans are exposed to thousands of chemicals every day, and only a small fraction have ever been tested for safety. Our primary chemical safety law, the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act, hasn't been updated for almost 40 years. The law is so badly broken that EPA is virtually powerless to restrict even known deadly carcinogens such as asbestos, which kills 10,000 Americans every year.

Right now, Congress has the best chance in a generation to protect our health by bringing our nation's main chemical safety law into the 21st century.

Please stand in support of working to improve America's chemical safety program by supporting the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act.
