19 Cents a Day is Not Enough

Statistics Canada says the inflation rate is 3.4%. The cost of fruits and vegetables have increased anywhere from 6 to 13%. Ontario has set rent increases to a possible 3.1%.

By raising social assistance rates in Ontario by only 1% this year ensures people spiral into deeper poverty.

Support a change in Ontario social assistance rates to one that reflects the real cost of food and shelter.

Note:  Since the campaign started we have noted a single person on OW has received 23 cents vs the cited 19 cents.  Any ideas on what to do with the extra 4 cents?
We the undersigned believe that social assistance rates in Ontario need to be set at a rate that adequately reflects the cost of basic necessities such as food and shelter.

Statistics Canada says the inflation rate is 3.4%. The cost of fruits and vegetables have increased anywhere from 6 to 13%. Ontario has set rent increases to a possible 3.1%.

Raising social assistance rates in Ontario by only 1% this year ensures people spiral into deeper poverty.

We believe that this is more than just the right thing to do.  During difficult economic times, it is in the best interest of all Ontarians to stimulate local economies and reduce spending on poverty-related health care costs by increasing benefits to adequate levels.

It is with genuine desire to see a more just and inclusive Ontario that we thank you for taking the time to address this matter.
