This petition addresses the absence of a safe pedestrian trail system in northeast St. Petersburg. Since 2003, there have been plans to construct a trail system (North Bay Trail) along San Martin Blvd NE which would provide cyclists and pedestrians a safe and secure trail in which to navigate between the recently completed Friendship Trail along Gandy Blvd and downtown St. Petersburg and the Pinellas Trail extension.
Numerous bike clubs and recreational bikers use this route as they make their way from Tampa to St. Petersburg and back. There is no paved shoulder along this route and in most cases the soft shoulder is non-existent. Too many times we have seen on the news where another cyclist has been run off the road and thrown into the mangroves.
The citizens and residents of Northeast St. Petersburg have long been neglected of a safe and secure trail system for our youth and adults alike. We have sat in silence as we have seen expansive trail system constructed throughout Pinellas County in the north, west and southern portions of the county. We believe that eight years is long enough and there have been too many casualties along San Martin Blvd.
