Concerned Professors for Troy Davis

Join historian Howard Zinn, activist and writer Angela Davis, and author Noam Chomsky and others taking a stand for Troy Davis...

Dear Colleague,
As you may be aware, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit denied Troy Anthony Davis most recent appeal, despite overwhelming evidence pointing to his innocence. Thus, the state of Georgia, which has brought Troy within hours of execution on several occasions, is free to sign yet another death warrant as soon as May 16, 2009.
We, Concerned Professors for Troy Davis, have been asked by Mr. Davis' sister Martina Correia to launch another endorsement campaign. Thus, we ask all faculty to endorse the letter below to Chatham County DA Larry Chisolm, who has the authority to re-investigate Troy's case in light of evidence of innocence. The letter will be delivered to Larry Chisolm, and will be published on the web, as well as in newspapers.
The stakes in this case are enormous, and grassroots action will determine the outcome. Please forward this message far and wide. Thank you very much for your attention to this urgent issue of justice.

Dear District Attorney Chisolm,
We come to you with an urgent issue that you have the power to make right. During your campaign you stressed community involvement, accountability, fairness and faith in seeking justice during your tenure as District Attorney; so, we urge you to look into the case of Troy Anthony Davis on death row in Georgia. Troy Davis has faced execution three times within a year and a half. His case has gained national and international attention and is shaking the very foundation of the judicial system in Georgia. The world is watching in total disbelief.
Mr. Davis was convicted based on the testimony of nine eyewitnesses for the 1989 murder of Mark MacPhail, an off-duty policeman, in Savannah, Georgia.  Seven of the nine eyewitnesses have recanted their testimony and nine new witnesses have implicated one of the remaining two witnesses who testified against Mr. Davis as the actual murderer.  No weapon or physical evidence linking him to the murder was ever found.  No jury has ever heard this new information, and four of the jurors who originally found him guilty have signed statements in support of Mr. Davis. If the State of Georgia and Chatham County proceed with the execution of an innocent person, the impact on the judicial system could be devastating.
Facing life or death, we must always get it right. This case is filled with reasonable doubt and choosing finality over fairness is not justice. Having taken oaths to be accountable to all, district attorneys across the country are re-opening possible cases of innocence, knowing that WE MUST ALWAYS GET IT RIGHT!  You, Mr. Chisolm, have a chance to choose fairness and we, Concerned Professors for Troy Davis, ask you to re-investigate the case of Troy Davis.  The World is Watching.
