National Campaign to Release Pastor Dino Gentile
Dear Mr. President,
We the undersigned do respectfully request you to grant clemency to Pastor Dino Gentile and commute his sentence to "time served." Please consider this a formal petition from your people.
For the last (11) years thousands of us, have written the White House concerning the release of Pastor Dino M. Gentile. Hundreds of Christian organizations with millions of constituents have pleaded for his release. The people in these organizations are from various denominations, races, backgrounds and generations. In short this vast majority has been ignored. When will our leaders listen to those who they represent and who voted for them?
We only wish you knew Pastor Gentile like we do, as we would the judge and the prosecutor, who have not witnessed the years of his service to people nationwide. He has fed, clothed and housed many, many people; the homeless, youth and the elderly, and helped drug addicts detox, some even in his own home. This we've seen. His help was not limited to Christians but people of all walks.
Why is it only at holidays or at the end of terms Presidents wait to grant clemency? Clemency was not designed by our forefathers as a lottery or private "friends and contributors" club, or as if it were a dirty deed. It was designed as a cure for unfair sentences (which Pastor Gentile has), a cure for aberrations. For over 20 years this "advanced nation" has had no federal parole. You could commute one sentence per day and it would not make a dent in the 200,000 plus inmates we have and do it in dignity as an incentive for people without hope. Model inmates, first time offenders, the elderly, all of which Pastor Gentile is. Mr. President, nations like Libya shoot down planes with over 200 people in them, they say they will repent, and we grant them instant forgiveness, but our own citizens with lesser crimes we leave to languish without mercy.
Pastor Gentile was offered two (2) years to plead guilty; he exercised his constitutional right to go to trial and received a forty one (41) year sentence. A twenty fold enhancement! He spoke to no one, threatened no one, had no weapon, never went inside the premises and no one was injured! But minimum mandatories and broad conspiracy laws have punished him with and outrageous and unfair sentence, which clemency could cure. Authorities said he had a very small part in the crime.
This was a model citizen, a Pastor in Los Angeles, a national evangelist and youth leader since 1984 who traveled the country changing lives, rescuing people, who made a mistake and we threw away the key. He has a lovely family, two daughters who need him and many who have pledged to help him "readjust."
Bishops, senators, ex-federal prosecutors, pastors and laity wrote the past administration that was supposed to represent conservative Christians that promised his clemency would be "put on the fast track," yet...nothing. People went to the White House on his behalf. Of these thousands who wrote previously, all of them know Pastor Dino personally and have seen his work first hand.
Articles about his prison ministry have been published where he continues to reach lost souls, many of these inmates who he has taught, upon their release have written us testifying of the affect Pastor Dino has had on them to change their ways. All on his own, Pastor Gentile petitioned Habitat for Humanity to allow prisoners to build homes for the needy families in his area, recently was successful in the FCC Lompoc implementation to contract to build 16 homes for Habitat for Humanity, one has already been completed. In the past he has send to the White House a plan signed by volunteer inmates wanting to work on "nation building" in Afghanistan or Iraq to free up troops and prove that inmates could still be useful, hoping this might reduce their draconian sentences; again...with no response.
He is an award winning inventor of a blimp that cleans smog, puts out fires, and counteracts terrorist attacks. His invention has the interest of DARPA, won second place in the world in the "Great Idea Contest," passed analytical studies at Cal Poly Tech and can bring massive jobs and revenues to this country! When interviewed, jurors have stated his trial was "botched by his attorney" and were shocked to find out he received a forty one (41) year sentence. He has fully "accepted responsibility" in writing to all. After serving almost 12 years he still has tremendous support.
Please Mr. Obama, don't forget about us and Pastor Dino, in the quiet times, remember mercy. Pastor Dino knows the system and can be a future voice for all prisoners, if you'd like. Most importantly, Mr. President, hear our plea, please do not wait, we and Pastor Gentile have waited for almost 12 years only to be disappointed at each holiday and at the end of each administration.
