How dare PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals; Jan, 10, 2009 Sioux City Journal/AP article) ask school officials in South Dakota to change the name of Spearfish High School to the %u201Csea kittens!%u201D
Doesn%u2019t PETA know that kittens (a.k.a. %u201Ccats%u201D), as well as puppies and other %u2018indoor%u2019 animals, are proven to be unhealthy to their human companions (a.k.a. %u201Cowners%u201D)? As a leading cause of rising health care costs in America, inside %u201Cpets%u201D are responsible for asthma, respiratory problems, and filthy living conditions - a tradition originating in Europe where peasants kept pigs, chickens and cows indoors. Not to mention the ill-health effects to the animals who need to be outside to properly condition their %u201Cfur coats%u201D and who also must put up with smelly humans. This hardly seems like ethical treatment of animals.
And what about the eating habits of PETA (People for the Eating of Tasty Animals?). Shouldn%u2019t they stop the vicious murder of all those superior plants and vegetables they keep killing in order to survive? Ruthlessly whacking away at innocent potatoes, carrots and string beans for their selfish interests %u2013 How dare they!
Although spearing of fish is more %u201Chumane%u201D then hooking them in the mouth, that remains an argument for Indigenous hunters and sports fisherman %u2013 not PETA%u2019s concern!
And haven%u2019t the heads of PETA checked a map lately!? Spearfish is 1,200 miles from the nearest ocean. The last I checked - while spearing fish in Spearfish Creek, by the way - the water was freshwater and not Seawater.
As a final note, could you imagine the High School cheerleaders in their sexy little outfits hollering %u201C%u201DGo sea kittens, go!%u201D It just ain%u2019t right.
