Developers Make Flooding Our Issue.

Between 2012-2017, there have been 7 floods in Houston. The damage from those floods could have been lessened if Houston had better flood infrastructure. The new development in Houston has made Houston more flood-prone because development has covered more of Houston's land with impermeable materials.

Houston has a history of limited zoning, this has led to an imbalance where developers profit without bearing the costs of flooding while residents are more exposed to flooding. For example, the loss of one acre of green space in Houston is the loss of land that can hold 325,851 gallons of water. I demand that the interests of residents in Houston are considered for flood control rather than the interests of developers. This will be accomplished by taxes on new development of private businesses and residences with a referendum on new development. This would limit the political influence of developers and put the issue of flooding not in the hands of a small group of politicians but in the hands of the people it affects the most.
